Managing Chronic Pain and Opioid Prescribing

CSUH's Center for Innovation in Academic Detailing on Opioids (CIAO) has developed a series of educational materials for use in clinical settings to help providers care for patients with chronic non-cancer pain. These materials were developed as part of an academic detailing program to provide opioid stewardship education to providers and pharmacists through one-on-one, interactive educational sessions. Read more about the program here.

If you'd like to learn more about our program, are interested in using our materials, or would like to receive academic detailing for yourself, county, or health plan, please contact ciao.sf@sfdph.org.

Notwithstanding overprescribing of opioid medications, efforts to reduce opioid prescribing also carry risks. Perhaps most problematic is the sense of abandonment experienced by patients. Tens of thousands of U.S. patients receiving opioids are forced to find new providers each year. Few clinicians are willing to take on the care of these patients, and even fewer provide the type of continuity necessary for a safe transition of care. CIAO has created a toolkit, directed at clinicians and regulators, to promote better patient care.
